Homeschool

Teaching your homeschoolers to become
Independent Learners

It hasn't been easy getting my girls to this stage in their education journey.  Because I am an A-type personality who has a deep love for organizing and taking charge, taking over is my natural go-to. We homeschool moms have to remind ourselves, almost daily, to work as an education facilitator and fight the urge to jump in there and do it.  We can encourage our students to time-manage and keep on top of their assignments.

How you ask?

1.  You may have to take a step back.  Give your students room to grow in self-management.  They can do it.  They won't if we, as homeschool moms, are always picking up the slack.

2.  Everyone gets an agenda.  The girls now keep track of their assignments.  I have continued to set the pace for their schedules, however, they are responsible for their assignment due dates, and scheduling in study time.

3.  Teach them how to chunk bigger and more involved projects into doable amounts of work to give them a sense of accomplishment.  Set check-in points, and stick to them.

Your students are capable of more than you think.  All we have to do is give them the opportunity.
